Ingredients Do Matter

Numerous studies suggest that the ingredients in your prenatal vitamin can determine how well your child develops inside you. Not every necessary pregnancy ingredient is well known. You probably know that you need plenty of Folic Acid and Iron. The less known vital ingredients are DHA, Choline, CoQ10, Probiotics, and Inositol. What’s troubling is the fact that many prenatal vitamins have not stepped up their game. They still only offer some vitamins and minerals.

There is a chance that your baby will be born completely healthy even if you are taking a prenatal vitamin without everything you need. But there is a similar risk that your baby will be born with a birth defect or that you will have major complications when you go into labor. Pregnancy is not a gamble. If you know something is better for your child, don’t hesitate to add it to your diet. Replace all the bad with the good.

Safety First

Any ingredient that is not good for you surely isn’t good for your baby. So, obviously, avoid prenatal vitamins that contain some kind of unnecessary ingredient. Baby’s Needs

Three ingredients should be in your prenatal vitamin today: Iron, Folic Acid, and Calcium.

Since you are pregnant, your blood supply has increased dramatically. Thus, you need plenty more Iron than a normal adult. The recommendation for pregnant women is at least 27 mg of Iron, but many women still are only getting the 18 mg recommended for adults in their prenatal vitamins. This is why it is is so important for you to scan the list of ingredients and their amounts to make sure everything is accounted for.

Folic Acid is another ingredient that pregnant women need more of than the average adult. At least 600 mcg of Folic Acid is recommended during pregnancy, but fortunately, most prenatal vitamins have at least 800 mcg or more. Prescription prenatal vitamins contain the most with at least 1,000 mcg of Folic Acid. When you get enough Folic Acid during pregnancy, your baby’s risk for developing a neural tube defect drops significantly.

A high amount of Calcium is uncommon in most prenatal vitamins. The recommended amount is at least 1,000 mg, but often, your prenatal vitamin will only have 200 mg (only 20%). Calcium is especially important towards the end of your pregnancy as your baby’s skeleton is taking final shape. You must give your baby enough Calcium so that it doesn’t start taking its calcium straight from your bones. This could lead to major health problems for you.
